 | | | If you had to choose an island to escape to from the more than 7,000 in this sun-kissed archipelago, we recommend you pick one in Palawan.
Known as the Philippines’ last ecological frontier, Palawan is an archipelago unto itself. Its slender 266-mile long mainland is surrounded by more than 1,700 smaller islands and islets. Nowhere else in the country can be found such a wealth of intact ecosystems and such thriving diversity of endemic wildlife.
Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites are found in Palawan: the famed Tubbataha Reef Marine Park, and the equally fascinating St. Paul Subterranean River and National Park.
The entire province is a Fish and Wildlife Sanctuary, as well as a Mangrove Forest Reserve. Vast tracts of tropical rainforests cover its terrain. Uncharted expanses of marine wilderness lie beneath its waters. With the South China Sea in the west and the Sulu Sea in the east, its extensive coastline harbors numerous coves and bays. In the north are the stark limestone cliffs and mysterious lagoons of Coron and El Nido. In the south are the archaeological digs of the Tabon Caves, where the 22,000-year-old remains of an ancient civilization were found in 1962.
Steeped in history, Palawan is a melting pot of ethnic cultures, resulting in a heritage that is as unique and diverse as its ecological treasures. For a glimpse of the islanders’ rich cultural legacy, visit the Palawan Museum. Or, scour the public markets and souvenir shops for handicrafts such as ethnic baskets, woven mats, local fabrics, woodcarvings, pearls and native accessories. | | | |

 | | | At the center of Palawan lies Puerto Princesa City, the capital. It is just an hour’s flight from Manila or 45 minutes from Cebu.
Despite the onset of modern development, Puerto Princesa has preserved the beauty and tranquility of its natural surroundings. Over the years, it has received several national and international awards for its clean and green image, and for its environmental initiatives.
Explore this sprawling city of tree-lined streets and a frontier-town ambience. The outskirts of the poblacion are lush with plantations of cashew, mango, coconut, corn, banana and rice. Some of its attractions include:
• St. Paul Subterranean River
• Islands in Honda Bay
• White sand beaches of Sabang
• Mangrove tours and sailing in Ulugan Bay
• Iwahig Penal Farm
• Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center (formerly Crocodile Farm)
