Did you know that...?
…Arreceffi Island is home to several hectares of mangrove forests, sea grass beds and kilometers of coral gardens waiting to be explored.  Old-growth mangrove forests cover two-thirds of the island’s coastline.  To date, 14 different species have been identified.  In the three hectares of sea grass beds around the island, 10 out of the total 16 species of sea grass endemic to the region have been found.

…The island’s mangroves are home to more than 70 species of resident and migratory birds, including the great-billed heron, Chinese egret, sunbirds, kingfishers, as well as several species of bitterns and terns.  If you’re patient, you may spot some of them while out kayaking.

…These precious habitats around the island have also been discovered to be the feeding ground for endangered sea cows or dugong, as well as home to nesting hawksbill turtles. Almost every year around September, sea turtle hatchings have been spotted on the island shores.

…Farther offshore, the resort’s dive site, Helen’s Garden, has been certified as having the most abundant and diverse coral cover in all of Honda Bay.

Protecting Honda Bay's Treasures
Recognizing the treasure trove of natural wonders in Honda Bay, Dos Palmas has set up its very own Marine Research Center to monitor and safeguard the complex marine and terrestrial ecosystems around the island and in Honda Bay.

Affiliated with the Palawan Geographic Society, the research center cooperates with scientists and the local university to conduct research on endemic flora and wildlife species.  Some of the projects and concerns of the marine research center include:
• Preserving the hectares of mangrove forests, sea grass beds and coral gardens
• Protecting and studying the resident and migratory birds and their habitat
• Monitoring the feeding grounds for endangered sea cows or dugongs
• Overseeing the nesting places of hawksbill turtles
• Creating an inventory of flora, fauna and marine life around the island
• Acting as repository of information, research materials, maps and references about the island and Honda Bay
• Serving as training facility for university students in the natural sciences

Preserving ecological balance on Arreceffi Island and Honda Bay has been a continuing commitment of Dos Palmas.  Guests are welcome to visit the research center for a look at the photos of flora, fauna and marine life found around the island.  Research materials, maps and references are also on hand for those who are interested.
